Role: Chief Engineer
Salary: $95,000 - 105,000
Location: Fairfax County, VA
About the Role
We’re looking for an experienced and hands-on Chief Engineer to lead the physical operations of a large-scale, 850-unit residential condominium. This role is ideal for someone who’s technically skilled, organized, and ready to take ownership of all things MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing). You’ll oversee a small team of maintenance engineers, manage daily operations and preventive maintenance, and ensure the building’s infrastructure runs smoothly, safely, and efficiently.
If you’re a natural leader with strong technical chops and enjoy being the go-to person for problem-solving, this could be a great fit. Our team is known for its longevity — employees stay here for the long haul thanks to a strong work environment, competitive pay, and excellent benefits.
What You’ll Do
- Supervise and mentor a team of three maintenance engineers; delegate tasks, ensure accountability, and provide ongoing training
- Operate and maintain centralized mechanical systems (boilers, HVAC and heat pumps, motors, fans, pumps)
- Conduct routine inspections and testing of equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety
- Monitor building environmental systems and respond quickly to HVAC, electrical, or plumbing issues
- Coordinate outside contractors for repairs and upgrades, ensuring quality and compliance
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, warranties, and inspections
- Assist with budget planning, cost control, and capital project oversight
- Submit monthly engineering reports to the General Manager
- Be on-call for emergencies and familiar with all building emergency systems and shutoffs
- Manage equipment inventory and ensure up-to-date documentation (manuals, schematics, logs)
What We’re Looking For
- Strong experience with engineering systems in large, high-rise, multi-family or commercial buildings
- In-depth knowledge of MEP systems and ability to troubleshoot complex issues
- Able to read and interpret technical manuals and building schematics
- Required certifications/licenses (HVAC, boiler operator, etc.) as mandated by local jurisdiction
- Skilled in using hand tools, diagnostic tools, and mechanical systems
- Comfortable working in physically demanding environments — ladders, tight spaces, overhead work
Preferred Skills & Traits
- Clear and professional communication skills (both verbal and written)
- Detail-oriented with strong recordkeeping and organization
- Courteous and respectful in interactions with residents, vendors, and coworkers
- Eager to learn and stay up-to-date with evolving technologies and standards
- Reliable and responsive, especially in emergency situations
